Robosoft Kompai takes care of your elderly so you don't have to (video)

This one has been quite a long time in coming, but Robosoft's service drone has finally made it off the drawing board, collected a catchy name, and headed off to the big world to seek its fortune as an R&D platform. Kompai is a personal assistance bot built around speech -- it understands basic instructions and requests and offers appropriate responses with its own monotonic style. It'll serve as a note and shopping list recorder, a calendar, a music player, or a video conferencing tool for when old grandpappy needs to call his doctor. If you think having a programmable hunk of mobile metal that's permanently connected to the net in your house is a good idea, look out for OEMs picking up the design during the Intercompany Long Term Care Insurance Conference taking place next week. And if you just wanna see a bug-eyed bot talk to an old dude, click past the break for the video.

[Thanks, Erico]

Woot Videos Captioned: Relax a Little Incident

Google’s old motto: Don’t be evil. The new one: Don’t speak English.

If you thought the main problem with our “Real Actual Field Test” videos was that they made too much sense, you’re in luck. Now you can watch them with the sound off, reading along with subtitles provided by “Transcribe Audio,” a feature in beta testing that uses Google’s speech recognition technologies to automatically caption YouTube videos. The results? Pure Dada.

RAFT00

YouTube, we want to ask, DO YOU UNDERSTAND THE WORDS THAT ARE COMING OUT OF OUR NARRATOR’S MOUTH? The answer: Enh, some of them...

We’d estimate Google’s software correctly interprets somewhere between a third and half of the words in our video voiceovers. From a programming standpoint, that’s pretty impressive! From a comprehensibility standpoint, it’s total gibberish.

Watch our most recent Real Actual Field Test (number five), and see if you can follow along with the transcript pasted below.

My personal favorite part of this transcript comes during the scene where our Air Hogs Switchblade fails to launch correctly and whacks our cameraman Kevin. To my ear, it sounds like he says “Argh! Ow, man!” But Google hears it as “I health plan.” Oddly appropriate.

RAFT01

BEGIN TRANSCRIPT

welcome to real action in field tests which relax a little incident

today we’re testing the spin master bear hugs switch weight remote aircraft are flying sort of that around and look in vain I was on it

what’s distinctive about this contraption is the way you can configure it flight either like a plane what would the twist suggesting like so of for the gate US troops died

RAFT02

here’s a look at it for nineteen US own mother

what happened

pretty cool it’s been this the numbers like so

an extension in the years the more conventional airplane note as you can see defies more or less street and I do to treat

how does this happen there’s like one tree in our old Texas sized parking lot and you fly straight

anyway it’s kind of hard to capture this home video but you can actually transform the thing from one vote to the other in midair we need to do a vertical takeoff from the launch pad US automotive and then shifted airplane noted and out come on he has to be done on purpose

here’s what it looks like we need more it from you have those we noted be made flight as you can the DC- it’s whirling around there

that’s fine your plan

in fairly shows upcoming this was a good flight down not that you can tell from my the footage

you can see you see it

the little things

the sky

not really

well it’s up there take my word for it I guess

ladies and gentlemen reached our scouts later on may six that’s because the nazis past that’s really all time in again yes

RAFT03

we also get it right indoors just doesn’t crazy it going to work toward really because it doesn’t do all that well you know very much wind but you have to have high ceilings so we recommend %uh how much he’ll win house or maybe a gothic style

also supposedly or as we say on the internet supposedly this which played the flyers best they can for just a couple of forty five degrees fahrenheit so when we got a nicer day we do that for a second afternoon of testing in the interest of science and also to get out of the meeting we have that changes to the capital plan laurin

I don’t know if the second day of tests like to really yielded all that much more information get captured some pretty good idea with this failed launch the air travelers

I

health plan

like I said we didn’t notice a huge difference in the handling from one day to the next summit the air temperature difference just wasn’t extreme enough but we did

oh for crying out loud

you guys are I mean the big do you not see them johnnie green things sticking around it’s not like the sport and for me

yes sir I don’t understand half we we have all this space right everybody at work with his charlie brown could cut all of a sudden

RAFT04

ridiculous

all right all in all we had a pretty good time playing with us which way at least one word can you not the truth and finally when we don’t have to admit at least it back into the wild

we know it was the right thing to do but you know that doesn’t mean we didn’t get choked up as did you want to listen he say about that in the country

so you’re seventy five this information helpful and we’ll see you next time for now the one who’s real actual field tests

END TRANSCRIPT

Thanks, Google! A huge improvement on the original!

So how about you? Happened across any amusingly shoddy automatic captions we should see?

Korea starts testing 'recharging road,' might make it part of its public transport system

Time to set aside the chains of worry that have prevented us from jumping on the electric bandwagon -- Korean researchers have figured out a way to make us forget all about charging stations and cruising ranges with their magnetically recharging road. The Online Electric Vehicle (OLEV) you see here went into service yesterday and can now be found towing three bus-loads of tourists around a Seoul amusement park. It operates on a battery five times smaller than conventional EV juice packs and can collect its power through non-contact magnetic transmission from the recharging strips in the ground. We're also told running costs for this system are a third of what a typical EV would require, and should it prove successful and find itself expanded to the public transport system, only about 20 percent of bus routes would need to be electrified -- at bus stops, crossroads and the like -- with the rest being covered by the power stored inside the OLEV. Here's to hoping it all works out.

Twitter’s New Security Strategy: Rewriting Some Users’ Links

biz stone twitter APFrom Media Memo: Beset by phishing attacks and other scammy behavior, Twitter is taking a step I don’t think I’ve seen anywhere else before: The social messaging service says it may change the text of its users’ messages in order to protect them.

Specifically, Twitter is going to rename links that users send to one another via direct messages, which allows the company to track them and shut them down if they turn out to be malicious. You’ll be able to identify the renamed links, because they’ll be shortened using a “twt.tl” prefix.

Bicycling Directions, Trails Comes to Google Maps

There's nothing worse for a bicyclist than finding yourself a mile in to a two-mile stretch of shoulder-less, busy, highway-speed traffic with no alternative route. Before today, this was a common occurrence if you went to trusty Google Maps to get bicycling directions, but starting today, that has all changed.

Google has added bicycling directions, lanes and routes to Google Maps, meaning you no longer have to drive, walk or bus to get directions. And we can tell you, bicyclists are excited.

Sponsor

Before now, the only option to cyclists to get even remotely appropriate directions, was to use the walking option, but this would still ignore bike trails. Google has heard the pleas of cyclists and, from first look, we have to say that the feature is well implemented.

We gave it a test to see if it would put us on some of Austin's more bike unfriendly streets, but it managed to chose some good alternative routes and stick to the bike trails when it could. The directions got a little wonky when we threw it a few curve balls, but we expect this to happen with any mapping service, especially one still in beta. But, as we've learned, you can't just go mindlessly follow directions, lest you end up in a lake.

gmaps-bike.jpg

The new feature also includes a "Bicycling Layer", which shows bike paths and bike-friendly streets with or without lanes. Three different lanes appear in the layer.

  • Dark green indicates a dedicated bike-only trail;
  • Light green indicates a dedicated bike lane along a road;
  • Dashed green indicates roads that are designated as preferred for bicycling, but without dedicated lanes

According to Google, it has also taken steps to avoid uphill and long downhill routes, busy roads and even busy intersections. Google says that it even takes hills and other factors into account when calculating your trip time. "Assuming typical values for mass and for wind resistance, we compute the effort you'll require and the speed you'll achieve while going uphill," Google says in its Lat Long Blog.

Google worked with the Rails-to-Trails Conservancy to bring more than 12,000 miles of biking trails to its map, along with bike lanes and recommended streets for 150 cities across the country. Google makes sure to point out that the feature is still in beta, so feel free to tell Google the next time you find yourself on a crowded, shoulder-less highway because of Google Maps.

And for those of you headed to fair Austin this week, make sure to take a look at the new feature, because it includes all of Austin's numerous bike trails and bike lanes. If you've never been to Austin for SXSW before, bicycling is the way to get around town and now you'll know how to get there.

Motion-Sim 4DOF racing simulator will take your retirement fund for the ride of its life (video)

Motion-Sim 4DOF racing simulator will take your retirement fund for the ride of its life (video)Race simulators like rFactor or iRacing offer the kind of gaming experience only available this side of a six-point harness, particularly when combined with a wheel like Logitech's G27, but sometimes it's a little difficult to get into the game when perched on an office chair. The 4DOF racing simulator from Motion-Sim will provides the missing link with a somewhat dangerous looking combination of pistons and articulating arms. It's been around for a few months but we're just now getting a chance to check out the thing in motion -- pitch, roll, yaw, and heave to be specific, with a harness of its own to keep the latter of those forces from sending you across the room whilst braking for La Source. It's only available to PC simmers (games like Gran Turismo and Forza don't provide the necessary output) and only the very richest ones: €18,450.00 for the home version, or $25,000 -- enough to get into a Formula Ford and onto a real track if you wanted. For everyone else we have two infinitely more affordable videos embedded below, one showing frantic F1 action, the other rallycrossing in Live for Speed.

AOL Ad Sales Confusion Is A Boon For Yahoo (AOL, YHOO)

chaos moshing mosh

AOL ad sales are in quiet chaos thanks to January layoffs and a subsequent re-org that CFO Artie Minson says resulted in 80% of accounts switching hands.

Analyst Douglas Anmuth of Barcalys Capital says this situation -- bad news for AOL -- is one of four reasons to bet on Yahoo, even as it cedes search share to Microsoft.

Leaked Verizon Memo: "The iPad Is An Opportunity For VZW!" (AAPL, VZ, T)

Those wily folks at Engadget landed an internal Verizon memo about the iPad.

In it, Verizon tells its employees that despite AT&T having the exclusive wireless rights to the device, "it's an opportunity for [Verizon Wireless]!"

How so? Verizon can sell more MiFi wireless devices. (MiFi is a little gizmo that acts as a wireless router anywhere Verizon's 3G is available.)

What Designers Do All Day, In Two Minutes Or Less

It goes by too fast to be much of use as a lesson. But this time-lapse screen-capture video of the making of a book cover design is still a fascinating look over the shoulder of a pro designer. And although it took six hours to make the design, watching the video will only cost you two minutes.

Google's Insider View On Why Newspapers Are Screwed (GOOG)

burntnewspapers

"The fact of the matter is that newspapers have never made much money from news," wrote Google’s chief economist Hal Varian on the Google Public Policy blog

Print newspapers traditionally "made money from the special interest sections on topics such as Automotive, Travel, Home & Garden, Food & Drink, and so on. These sections attract contextually targeted advertising, which is much more effective than non-targeted advertising." But as newspapers lost their grip on advertisers and readers, they now have to be where users go, whether that is on Google or Amazon or other aggregators.

“Price is Right” Ups the Ante for April Fools 2010

The Price is Right has been finally embracing holidays. The one I look forward to more than any for the show is April Fools Day, where they let the show go crazy. Every year it gets progressively weirder. The first year wasn’t much because they still had the old people there. When they were gone, Drew and the crew finally started having some fun in 2009 with set malfunctions, strange prizes, and Drew’s nemesis from his sitcom, Mimi Bobeck (played by Kathy Kinney), as one of the models. One of the complaints last year was as great as it was to have Mimi back (Drew’s sitcom is one of my favorites), and the crowd apparently loved it, she didn’t really talk or do much of anything. It’s going to change in 2010.

TVGuide talked about the upcoming April Fools special. It’s more story driven this year, so this may be interesting and awesome. Mimi will be taking over as the show’s producer. One of the first things she does is having announcer Rich Fields replaced by a monkey. Well, someone in a monkey suit. The second thing is much funnier. Mimi will demote all of the models and replace them with guys. Not male models, either. The models will be, well, interesting looking, according to emails sent to us. Given it being Mimi it would have been funny to have them as troll dolls, but I digress in a very nerdy way. Other things will most likely happen through the episode.

There we go. I can’t wait to see what you think. I think I can already plot this out. We’ll get three or four people (I think I can already name them) saying what a horrible idea it is and why have they done this to their precious show. But most of the others with a sense of humor and like this sort of thing, like myself, can see that it’s only for one show and it’s a special day for the show which is notorious for going off-the-wall. Why not have a bit of fun? I’m really looking forward to this one. It sounds hysterical.

CE-Oh no he didn't!: Katzenberg says 'beautifully styled' 3D glasses won't make you look like a dweeb

Another day, another CEO with more lip gloss than brain matter. Jeffrey Katzenberg has been talking to USA Today on what seems to be his favorite topic these days, 3D, and telling us that the glasses ain't no big deal. After all, "many many many people" wear glasses -- that's three lots of many for those keeping count at home -- and the new and improved 3D appendages are so "beautifully styled" that he expects them to start popping up at your local optometrist right next to the sunglasses and designer eyewear isles. In fact, this dude's sipping the corporate firewater so hard, we half-expect him to tell us that 3D offers "very high value" for money or ... wait, he said that too? Alright, we give up.

Why Apple's Oscar Ad Won't Go Viral (AAPL)

iPad ad

NEW YORK (AdAge.com) -- Apple went big on TV for the new iPad with multiple spots during the Oscars telecast, but don't expect "Meet iPad" to do huge numbers on the web.

While other big-budget TV marketers have taken to flogging their TV ads using social tools on YouTube, Twitter and elsewhere, Apple's strategy is decidedly retro. For Apple, it's all about driving viewers to Apple.com, and a potential sale; dissemination of the video itself is secondary.

OO HD wireless projector concept reaches for the stars, almost grabs 'em (video)

David Riesenberg obviously had his head in the clouds when he dreamed up the OO High Definition Wireless Projector, but it's not like we're kvetching about his imagination's ability to go far beyond the limits of most humans. For one thing, the concept 1080p projector looks (and lands) like a stunning orange UFO; for another, the specs are otherwordly. Should the device ever come to market, Reisenberg says it will pack SSD storage, WiFi and internal decoder chips into its svelte, 11-inch round carbon fiber frame, as well as three independently articulated legs for balance and a Li-ion battery for up to three hours of cord-free HD streaming and playback. Did we mention it's got a matching touchscreen remote? And our deepest affection, forever and ever? See what we're drooling over in Riesenberg's subtle video homage to a certain interstellar piano waltz right after the break.

[Thanks, David]
